2026 Divan

What is a Divan?

Each Shrine Temple has its own Divan (temple leadership), which consists of a minimum of five members as mandated by Imperial by-laws. These Divan members are elected by the members of the temple, also called the Nobility. Additional positions on the Divan, beyond the minimum requirement, are typically appointed by the Potentate.

Similar to many Masonic organizations, the Divan follows a progressive line. This means that each year, one new member is appointed or elected to the line, while existing members move up one position. The top member of the Divan retires from the line and assumes the role of Past Potentate.

In addition to the elected Divan members, the Recorder (Secretary) and Treasurer are also considered part of the Divan. Unlike the members in the progressive line, these officers may serve in their respective roles for more than one year if re-elected.
